Just as we were all thinking the Ducati 1098 was the best V-twin ever, out of nowhere Ducati's 1198 appears and you can see it here in our video.
MCN senior road tester travelled to Portugal's Circuito de Algarve to get the first ride of Ducati's 1198 to see if bigger does mean better.

Ducati is eye candy. Sounds like symphony and makes you feel good...Priced very expensively...Something most of us regular riders can't afford.
Japanese Bikes also eye candy. Buzzing high revving speedsters and adrenaline providers...Priced reasonably...something we can afford.

@illbluntz420 No doubt, a very high percentage of riders can't get the full potential out of these bikes, let alone a "built" jap bike. I would be in that group as well, especially since I haven't owned a bike in over a decade. But if you really think about it Ducati's aren't that much more expensive than the japs, especially after you spend all that money making it better than the Duc. But that doesn't matter to me, I'll be getting the Duc, better styling, better sound, and its unique.

If I were to get a new sportbike I'd walk right by the Jap bikes to one of these. For a few simple reasons. One, Jap bikes are all so cookie cutter, if you took the labels off you couldn't tell a 600 from a 1000. Two, hardly any one rides a Ducati, so owning one is like being in an exclusive club. Three, it's like a Ferrari everybody deep down wants one, they just don't get one because of sticker shock. And then justifies not getting one by claiming they know more than everyone else.

there's a very good reason for this. ducati bikes have a bad reputation for being notoriously unreliable, this is why you'll hear people saying things like "ducati, turning bikers into mechanics since 1926".
i personally would rather spend more time on the road than in the garage wishin i was on the road.

ducatis aren't designed to be ridden day in day out, they're for sunday bikers.

@Rabsputin Oh you're one of those assholes thats thinks you have to be a biker with no other means of transportation in order to be worthy of owning a bike. Of course its a sunday bike, its like owning a Ferrari...not exactly a daily commuter there genius. Ducati's were never really designed for easy riding and cruising. Designed for the track days. They're specialty built rides. Besides I work on sundays, I'll be riding it on fridays!

not at all, but being a biker means your bike is your primary means of transportation. i know plenty of bikers who own cars, i also know plenty of people who own bikes that i wouldn't describe as bikers because they spend most of their road time inside a metal and glass cage.

@Rabsputin it depends on where you live also. i live in northern Italy and from november to the beginning of march is impossible to ride the bike due to rain and snow. does that make me a non-biker? ofc not, it's not the time you spend on your bike that makes you a biker. it's the love, the love for the bike and the respect for other people you see on the bike even if it's the only they they can ride the bike in the year but they still keep it. i'd say they're more "bikers" than you and others

@Margalus89 you don't know me well enough to judge as to whether they're more biker than i am. FYI the only time i won't ride is when there's either 100mph winds or snow or ice on the road because i'm not interested in being blown into on-coming traffic and a cracked crank casing will have me off the road longer than the snow and ice will, so while you're saying it's the love that makes you more of a biker, it only applies if you actually ride the fucking thing.

anyway since we're not arguing anymore it seems, i have a 2007 Honda CBR 600 RR but the bikes i've been riding in the last two years are 4 R1's from different years, a 2002 Suzuki GSX-R 600 and a 2002 Honda Hornet. ofc it wasn't all my bikes, they're a friend of my dad's, my uncle's and my cousin's :D
